Can You Freeze Bologna?

Jump to Recipe Print Recipe

Yes, you can freeze bologna for 2 to 3 months without loss of taste or texture. It freezes well due to its low water content. Simply double wrap your bologna, place it in a freezer bag with the air squeezed out, label with the date and then toss in the freezer.

How to Freeze Bologna

Bologna is a relatively inexpensive lunch meat that is actually technically a type of sausage. It is made from leftover cuts of meats that can range from pork to beef to chicken.

It originated in an Italian city with the same name. In Europe it is slightly different textured than the bologna you may be familiar with in the United States. The main difference between the two is it in the United States all of the meat cuts are pureed together creating a more smooth lunch meat.

Bologna is traditionally used to make a variety of different types of bologna sandwiches but it can also be used in casseroles and other dishes. Unfortunately, bologna from the deli typically only lasts around a week before it goes bad.

So, if you want to buy it when it's on sale and stock up a little you'll need to figure a way to extend its shelf life. Luckily, due to its density and low water content bologna freezes exceptionally well. The process works similarly to that for freezing salami, freezing cooked sausage and freezing rotisserie chicken.

Follow these easy steps and you can have your bologna frozen in a matter of minutes.

Portion it

Start by deciding what portion sizes you will ultimately need when you have thawed your bologna. If you'll be able to use it all at once, you can leave it packaged all together. If you only use a few slices at a time, then you should separate it into those sized portions.

Wrap it

Next, you'll need to get it thoroughly wrapped in order to keep air away from it while it's frozen which would prevent freezer burn.

If you're freezing at all together and the package is unopened you can leave it in the package to start as an extra layer of protection.

Then, take a layer of plastic wrap and place your portion of baloney in the middle and then secure the plastic wrap completely around the bologna. If you'll be keeping it frozen for an extended period of time, you want to add at least a second layer of plastic wrap or a layer of aluminum foil in addition.

Pack it

Take your wrapped bologna and place it into a freezer bag. Alternatively, you can use an airtight container for this stuff. Although a container will take up more room in the freezer.

Seal it up

Squeeze any extra air out of your freezer bag and then carefully zip it shut. You can do this by almost completely zipping the bag and then folding it over as you press the air towards the top and then finally sealing at the rest of the way.

Label and freeze it

Write the date on the outside of your bag or container and then toss it into the freezer.

Top freezing tips

Also make sure to follow these important tips when freezing your bologna so that it maintains the highest quality and freshness possible.

  • Do it fresh. The fresher it is when you put it in the freezer the better. This ensures that it hasn't started to go bad and also that it is at maximum quality and freshness.
  • Decide on portions. Make sure you know how much you'll be using at a time when you thought so that you can portion it appropriately and not waste any when it's thawed.
  • Keep the air out. If you know that you'll be freezing it for on extended period of time, it's of utmost importance to wrap it tightly so that you can keep the air out and prevent freezer burn.

How to Defrost Bologna

The best way to defrost your bologna without any decrease in quality is by removing it from the freezer and placing it into the fridge to thaw overnight. If you have frozen a large package of bologna all together, it may take longer than eight or so hours to fully defrost.

If you're in a really large rush to defrost your bologna, you can take your sealed package from the freezer and place it in room temperature water to help speed up the process. But be aware that this can cause some texture issues.
